Joint geology and soil scientist each with separate qualifications.  Membership consists of one academic geologist, one soil scientist; one independent consultant or salaried geologist, one independent consultant or salaried soil scientist, State Geologist, State Soil Scientist, and one public member.

Baccalaureate or Master's in geological sciences or 30 semester credits in geological sciences

Seven years professional geologic work.   Education credits beyond Bachelor's degree can be utilized for up to a maximum of two years

Massachusetts maintains a licensing program for environmental professionals who oversee assessments and cleanups in the waste site cleanup program, which addresses soil and ground-water contamination at non-Superfund sites in the Commonwealth. Some of these environmental professionals happen to be geologists, but many others are environmental, chemical, or civil engineers; chemists; environmental scientists; risk assessors, and associated disciplines.

Bills have been introduced in the Legislature to require a person engaged in the public practice of geology to be licensed as a geologist. The bills would also establish a Board of Professional Geologists, set fees for licensure, and require the State Geologist to be licensed. No action has been taken on the bills.
